Banned in schools in the early ‘60s for its use of vulgar words and the presentation of a rebellious drunkard for a protagonist, this book was listed in the Time Magazine’s 100 Best English-language novels.
It tells the story of Holden Caulifield, a 16-year-old growing up in the 1950s who got expelled from Pencey Prep., an elite school for boys. Afraid that his parents might find out his expulsion, he decided to bum around New York City and wait until it’s time to go home for the Christmas vacation. His spontaneous, rebellious, and reckless character led him to mishaps like getting knocked out by an elevator boy, a clumsy encounter with a prostitute, and an awkward marriage proposal to a girl he had been dating. Throughout the story Holden argued about people being shallow and phony. However, despite the projected impulsive and negligent image, lives within him a heart that aspires to find comfort and understanding.
A little angsty in the language, though, Salinger gives a vivid view of not only the scenario but also protagonist’s character through Holden’s monologue of thoughts and encounters. Salinger has done a pretty good job helping his readers dissect Holden’s musings in a sensible and rational way.
Salinger took a slice from his life, his youth, to show that everyone—especially the adolescents—go through certain phases others may not understand. His work presented a challenge that one must find his niche first, because only until then one will find happiness and contentment.
A good book for to read over a cup of coffee, The Catcher in the Rye is a page-turner coming-of-age story beautifully told.
