Carissa Villacorta has created a new therapeutic resort for the soul in her book, “Surreality”. As its title suggests, Surreality is her concept of the mixture of surrealism and reality that she found in her daily experiences in New York. It tells us that these surrealities make life feel like a million rollercoaster rides –and the best part is, it can happen to anyone.
The book consists of the young Filipina-New Yorker’s compilation of essays that appeared in Philippine Daily Inquirer, Philippine News and other publications. It dwells on her unique and witty perspective about both the simple and big occurrences in one’s life.
She discovered her passion and dream in the Big Apple that opened her to the wilderness of life. She became independent and found her key to true happiness and living. Surreality takes you to her world, her ups and downs and realizations in a country that has a very different environment and rules, with diverse people and culture.
In her quest for pursuing her dream, Villacorta used to travel with her mother in numerous countries before she finally decided to stay in New York. At first, she hoped of becoming a famous fashion designer but in the long run she uncovered and developed her passion for writing—a passion that change her life.
As a writer, she did not bother to keep a diary or a journal but after some time she realized it is vital to record one’s experiences and this is how her 166-page book came about.
What makes Surreality so interesting is that Villacorta conveys to her readers what she exactly wants to say with such simplicity and yet at the same time, her words are very moving and enlightening. Yes, it is about living but also thinking about death, it’s about love but also considering what is right, it’s about learning from books and popular sayings but also valuing the priceless conversations with the people we meet, it’s about advices on striving for your dreams but also making time for yourself, families and friends, and so much more.
The book is a bundle of reminders that will keep you going back to pages that has inspired you and will make you want to read it over and over and scan for some more.
A powerful phrase such as, “But then I got to thinking, we live like our happily ever after will only just begin. After we get out, get married or get to the end. And then I realize, I’ve been living happily ever since…” is a compelling example from her writings.
