Main building? Carpark? Quadricentennial Park? Who doesn’t know these landmarks inside UST?
Yes, Thomasians have probably already familiarized themselves with the 15 statues on top of the grayish building somewhere in the middle of the campus or which among Benavides’ fingers is pointing to the sky. But who knows about Araullo drive? What about Osmeña drive?
Would you believe that there are over ten street signs inside the campus? If you are a keen observant, you will notice that posts of these are everywhere.
Lovers’ Lane –the so-called “Lovers’ Lane” or where L.O.V.E happens, behind the Arch of the Centuries, actually has three lanes namely the Burgos Lane, Rizal Lane and the M.H. Del Pilar Lane.
Why wonder why the Main Building is not associated in any drive? It’s because Main Building is located in the middle of the campus, that it is linked to 4 drives: L. Ma. Guerrero Drive, Quezon Drive, L. Guerrero Drive, and Osmeña Drive.
Isn’t it nice to be aware of the street signs inside UST? In fact, these are not merely street signs to guide us with the locations but a constant reminder as well of how these prominent names have become part of our university’s achievements. These people are part of the school history, people who contributed in building up the name of the Royal, Pontifical and Catholic University that is ready to embrace its 400th year in 2011.
As true Thomasians, we must learn to recognize and appreciate the wonders of each name written on the street sign. It may seem not to be a big of a deal, however it unconsciously enhances our passion and loyalty to serve like them –and be like them.
So next time you hang out with your friends or with *ahem* a special someone at the famous “Lovers’ Lane”, take time first to value the essence of the original name of the place and why it is called such as a sign of honor and respect.
